5 Tips for Choosing Interior Paint Colors

Choosing the colors on the inside of your home can be just as challenging as choosing your exterior colors and all the selections when building your brand new home! Painting your home takes time, hours of rolling paint and money - so you’ll want to get it right the first time! Our team at Blue Fern Homes wants to keep the new home process fun for you before, during and even after move-in. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when choosing your interior paint colors.

Find Your Inspiration

Do you have a specific color scheme you’re wanting to aim for in each room? Head to your closest Lowes, Home Depot or any other hardware or paint stores to look at the colors in person. You’ll find there are thousands of color options. Take home paint swatches from every color family to really nail down the exact colors you want.

Not sure where to start? Get inspired by searching through Pinterest! Pinterest has millions of ideas, color schemes and interior design photography that can help you find inspiration and piece together the perfect colors for your home.

Keep Your Furniture in Mind

When deciding paint colors, keep in mind the furniture you’re wanting in that room - whether it’s brand new pieces you haven’t received yet or pieces you already currently have in the space. This is extremely important for rooms like the great room where you a sofa is the main furniture piece.

If you don’t have the furniture yet, you may want to either wait until you have that furniture or plan to get neutral-colored furniture that can essentially go with any color like a white or light beige.

Consider the Color of the Year

The Color of the Year is a great starting or ending point. The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue. The Pantone Color of the Year selection process requires research and trend analysis. Each year Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute search through the world looking for new color influences. They take influences into consideration like current design trends, socio-economic conditions, new artists, fashions and so much more.

Is Classic Blue not your favorite hue of blue? The 2020 Sherwin Williams Color of the Year is Naval SW 6244. Sherwin Williams analyzes many factors when choosing the color of the year. “Giving a nod to Art Deco influences, Naval fuses the striking and bold opulence of Art Deco with the awe‑inspiring power of nature – from the infinite night sky to the mysterious depths of the sea – bringing navy out of its comfort zone to usher in an empowering new year and fresh decade of change.”

Stick Paint Swatches to the Wall

Head to your local hardware or paint store to grab multiple paint swatches in your desired colors. Tape or pin the paint swatches on your walls and against the crown molding or trim! Add in a few accent color swatches, furniture pieces or home decor. If the small paint swatches from the store are too small for you to visualize it, buy a small sample paint can and paint a poster board with your desired colors.

Look at Paint Swatches at Different Times of The Day

Leave those paint swatches on your walls for a few days and take a look at them at different times throughout the day. You may find that you liked the paint swatch in the natural light from your windows but not at night when you’re using lighting fixtures. This will also allow you to test the way your painted walls will look with fluorescent light bulbs versus incandescent.
